Last week ( September 18th -25th ), Fifth Season Financial attended AONN Conference – Academy of Oncology of Nurse and Patient Navigators – largest national specialty organization dedicated to improving patient care and quality of life by defining, enhancing, and promoting the role of oncology nurse and patient navigators.
More than 600 Oncology Nurse and Patient Navigators came to Orlando for a weekend of education and networking. Presentations over the four days were packed with valuable insights and novel ideas. Fifth Season Financial was excited to have an opportunity to interact, learn about best practices, and discuss cancer treatment trends and challenges.
One of the challenges they deal with all the time is more and more patients are seeking financial assistance to help pay their medical debt. The expense, anxiety and loss of confidence confronting those who face large, unpredictable costs, often compounded by decreased ability to work.
According to University of Chicago, the cost of cancer care is rising faster than the cost of health care, and the cost of new cancer drugs is rising faster than the cost of overall cancer care. It was very clear that patients as well as patient navigators need more options to help patients deal with the rising cost of care.
Here are the 7 Hottest Topics in Patient Navigation that were discussed during the conference, including:
- Best practices in cancer patient navigation
- Commission on Cancer standards
- Personalized cancer therapies
- Complementary cancer therapies
- Genetic testing
- Patient assistance programs
- Survivorship planning
